The Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance has been awarded since 1990. In 1992 and 1994 the award was presented as the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance with Vocal.

The designation of what is "metal" and what is "hard rock" can be somewhat arbitrary; for instance, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, and Soundgarden have won awards in both categories. (see Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance)

Years reflect the year in which the Grammy Awards were handed out, for music released in the previous year.
