Flint Northwestern High School was first opened in September of 1964. Further additions to the building were the swiming pool in November of 1964 and then the football stadium in the fall of 1967. When the school was first built it was dedicated to the Board of Education by Claude E. Stout. The school mascot is and has always been the wildcat and the school colors are green and white. Flint Northwestern became an Edison partnership school in 1999 when the administration was turned over to the Edison Schools, the country's leading private manager of public schools. At that time the name became Flint Northwestern/ Edison Community High School. Perhaps the most famous graduate of Flint Northwestern is former NBA star Glen Rice.
