Duchy of Ferrara
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Duchy of Ferrara is a former sovereign state of northern Italy.
In 1264 Obizzo II d'Este was proclaimed lifelong ruler of Ferrara, seignior of Modena in 1288 and of Reggio in 1289.
In 1452 the family of Este, Lords of Ferrara, were created Dukes of Modena and Reggio, becoming Dukes of Ferrara in 1471.
In 1597, they lost the succession of Ferrara itself to the Papal States, when Alfonso II died without heirs .
