Dominican University is a private university located in River Forest, Illinois. It is a Catholic institution, affiliated with the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters. Dominican University is classified as one of the top Midwestern "Master's Universities" by U.S. News and World Report.[1] It is ranked in the top tier of that regional category, currently at #21.[2] Dominican offers a range of undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences as well as several master's programs in practice-oriented disciplines such as business, education, social work, and library and information science.[3]

The school began as St. Clara Academy, chartered by Samuel Charles Mazzuchelli in 1848 in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin. It became a college in 1901 and moved to River Forest, Illinois, taking the name Rosary College in 1922 while under the leadership of Mother Samuel Coughlin of the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters. The present name of Dominican University was adopted in 1997 as part of a strategic plan to reflect the school's Dominican heritage and its status as a more comprehensive university.[4]
The university operates under the following mission statement: "As a Sinsinawa Dominican-sponsored institution, Dominican University prepares students to pursue truth, to give compassionate service and to participate in the creation of a more just and humane world.[5]

Dominican University comprises six distinct academic divisions:
Rosary College of Arts and Sciences
Reflecting the institution's previous name of Rosary College, this academic division houses most of Dominican's undergraduate programs.
Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS)
The Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) offers a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) and Master of Science in Knowledge Management. It also offers a certification for school library media specialists.
Recognized since 1936, the GSLIS is accredited by the American Library Association. However, the current accreditation status is "Conditional,"[6] meaning that the program must make changes to comply with ALA Standards.[7]
The GSLIS publishes a semi-annual, peer-reviewed online journal called World Libraries, a publication dedicated to "librarians and libraries in regions without associations or agencies to encourage scholarly communication and professional development." The publication of World Libraries is coordinated by students studying internet publishing.
The school also presents a number of annual lectures in the field of library science, including the McCusker, Lazerow , and C.W. Follett Lectures.
Brennan School of Business
Dominican's business school, started in 1977, offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in a range of business disciplines.[8] The school states that it has developed a reputation for "global business and international study" and offers programs in Europe and Asia.[9]
School of Education
The School of Education traces its roots to the programs of teacher preparation offered at St Clara College. The School of Education offers graduate degree programs, graduate certification entitlement programs, and programs leading to state endorsements and certifications.[10]
Graduate School of Social Work
Dominican offers a Master of Social Work degree that emphasizes social work practice.[11] The MSW program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.[12]
School of Leadership and Continuing Studies
The School of Leadership and Continuing Studies is an academic division specifically created to serve the needs of adult learners. The SLCS administers accelerated bachelor's and master's degrees in organizational leadership.

The Dominican University Stars compete at NCAA Division III in the Northern Athletics Conference. Sports include basketball, soccer, cross country, tennis, baseball, and softball.
Prior to 1997, the athletic teams of the all-women's Rosary College were known as the Rosary Beads.
