Denker Tournament of High School Champions
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Denker Tournament of High School Champions is a six-round chess tournament that occurs annually in the United States alongside the US Open. The competitors are invitation only; limited to the high school champions of each state, although a host state may be allowed an additional competitor.
Started by Arnold Denker in the early 90's, it has steadily grown to where most states now send participants. In the past the event was sponsored by Arnold Denker, but due to his death, funding for the tournament was in question, until it was agreed to be funded by woman grandmaster Susan Polgar, who also started the Polgar Tournament of Champions for girls. The two tournaments run side-by-side. The event is also sponsored by the University of Texas at Dallas, who gives a full scholarship to the first place winner every year.
