David Huckabee is a mortgage broker[3] and the sole married son of United States 2008 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.[4] David's wife Lauren, an attorney, is involved in Mike Huckabee's campaign for president, having registered Mike as a candidate[5] and having served as "Ballot Access and Delegate Director".[6] Both David and Lauren have been listed as payees for the Huckabee campaign.[7]
David attended Arkansas State University (ASU) where he majored in political science and served as president on both the Union Advisory Board and the Student Government Association.[8] He ran two companies while at ASU: "Pyro Erectus" and "H&K Enterprises" both of which were contracted by ASU for in excess of USD $5000.00.[9] When the City of Jonesboro prompted him to register those two companies he paid the $62.50 fee using solely pennies.[9] Huckabee joined the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and his father then Gov. Mike Huckabee followed suit joining in 2007.[10] He was class prom king.[8]
While a freshman at ASU, Huckabee said in an interview with the school newspaper that he chose to go to school in Arkansas so he could get involved in the state's political process.[11] Hucakbee said, "my dream is to either be the President or to be the one who makes the President the President."[11]
[edit] Boy Scouts controversy
In the fourth quarter of 2007 Huckabee's 1998 dismissal as a counselor for the Boy Scouts was exposed.[12][13] Huckabee, then 17, had some level of involvement in the death of a stray dog.[12]
When an animal rights group sought records from the Arkansas state police they were denied. John Bailey, the then Police chief reported that "(Mike Huckabee's) chief of staff and personal lawyer both leaned on him to write a letter officially denying the local prosecutor's request".[12] Mike Huckabee fired Bailey seven months later. In December 2007, during Huckabee's campaign for President, Bailey told Newsweek that the governor said at the time, "I've lost confidence in your ability to do your job" and, "I couldn't get you to help me with my son when I had that problem".[12]
Mike Huckabee vehemently denies the allegations made by Bailey.[12] While Mike Huckabee insists his son did not engage in "intentional torture," and a campaign official said that he "'regrets' the incident"[12]
[edit] Arrest
Huckabee was arrested at 6AM,[14] on April 26, 2007, for attempting to board a plane departing from Little Rock, Arkansas with a loaded Glock handgun.[15] A misdemeanor charge was brought against him for "attempting to carry a gun in a prohibited place."[14] He entered a guilty plea with the court.[15]
