Coordinates: Daman (Damão in Portuguese), is a city and a municipal council in Daman district in the state of Daman & Diu, India. Although the Indian Air Force operates Daman Airport there is no public airport in the area.

As of 2001 India census,[2] Daman had a population of 35,743. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Daman has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 64.84%: male literacy is 81% and, female literacy is 70%. In Daman, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
