In astrology, a cusp (from the Latin for spear or point) is the imaginary line that separates a sign in the zodiac or a house in the horoscope.
Because the solar disc has a diameter of approximately half a degree, it is possible for the sun to straddle the cusp as it moves across the sky. When this occurs at the moment of birth such a person is said to be "born on the cusp" and some believe that their life is influenced by the characteristics of both signs. [edit] Controversy regarding Cusps
Many astrologers disregard the existance of sun-sign cusps. This is because the position of the eight planets in addition to the Sun help determine an individual's personality. The reason cusp people may appear to have the personalities of the neighboring sign is because another planet might be in that particular neighboring sign. For example, let's say a person's sun sign is 00 degrees libra, or "the virgo/libra cusp". That person may appear to exhibit virgo-like tendencies despite the sun being in libra because that individual's mercury-sign is in virgo. This is often the case with cusp people, especially with the planet mercury which is never more than 28 degrees from the sun-sign. That means an individual born on the cusp will be more likely to have their mercury-sign in the previous sun-sign than people who weren't born during the cusp. The planet mercury governs the way a person thinks so a person with a Libra Sun and a Virgo Mercury will appear to be a "hypochondriac, introverted and health oriented" but still have the traditional Libra qualities, such as being "diplomatic, charming and indecisive". Although, since mercury can be no more than 28 degrees from the sun, either way, this can also mean that a person whose sun sign is 00 degrees libra might have their mercury in libra as well. Therefore, many astrologers reccomend that a person who was born on a cusp get a detailed natal chart prepared, outlining the positions of the planets on their birth.
