Coral Reef Senior High School is a secondary school located at 10101 S.W. 152nd Street in Miami, Florida; its principal is currently Mrs. Adrianne F. Leal. Coral Reef is locally known as "Miami's Mega Magnet School" since it offers six different magnet programs.

According to Newsweek's List of the 1,000 Top U.S. Schools (2007), the school is ranked at 20th in the nation, making it 7th in the state of Florida. In 2006 and 2005, it had ranked 29th and 13th, respectively. This ranking is based on a ratio devised by Jay Mathews, which takes the number of Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests taken by all students at a school in that school year and divides it by the number of graduating seniors.

The school does not primarily serve the surrounding neighborhoods, but instead takes applications from middle school students all over the county. Selection is done via a lottery system for all magnet programs except for Visual & Performing Arts, for which acceptance is based on ability; students must audition for this program. Most students living around the Coral Reef area attend Miami Palmetto Senior High School or Miami Killian Senior High School.

Coral Reef had set the standard amongst other schools in Miami-Dade County as being the only school to receive an "A" grade for its performance on the FCAT examination for the first nine years of its existence. Due to this, the school receives higher funding than most other schools in the district. However, the streak ended when Coral Reef received a "B" for the 2006-2007 school year.

Coral Reef has three publications: the newspaper, Baitline, their yearbook, Tsunami, and the school's literary magazine, Elysium. The newspaper is published monthly while the yearbook and literary magazine are both published annually. The daily morning newscast, CRTV Live (originally known as Cudavision, and later adapted to include the channel number as Cudavision 21), airs on closed-circuit channel 21.

Coral Reef has six different magnets: International Baccalaureate, Leisure Medicine & Health Science, Business & Finance, Legal & Public Affairs, Agriscience & Engineering Technology, and Visual & Performing Arts.

[edit] Agriscience & Engineering Technology

Students in the Agriscience strand will explore and study areas in the foundations course that deal with agronomy, horticulture, forestry, entomology, aquatics, environmental science, and mechanical technology.

Students will explore the field of Agricultural Biotechnology and learn more about plants, conduct field research on rare and native tropical plant species, study wetlands, and marine habitats. Students will learn about Florida's vast and changing environment. Students will also choose to channel their studies in the fields of plant biotechnology or animal biotechnology as they progress through the course sequence, under the teachers of Mrs. Washington or Ms. Jackson respectively.

The agriscience academy also, has a FFA Chapter, which competes in events competitions, including parliamentary procedures, floriculture, nursery and landscape, agri-bussiness, agri-science fair, environmental science, and FFA creed; these events are held at the chapter, regional, state and national levels. They also hold annual events such as, family fun day, summer bash, freshmen parent night, and an awards banquet. The chapter is supported by the Coral Reef FFA Alumni Chapter.

[edit] Business & Finance

The Academy of Business and Finance introduces students to the broad career opportunities in the business and financial services industry, and in the process, equips them to make sound choices in for the future. This academy is a member of the National Academy Foundation (NAF), whose headquarters is in New York. Student in the Academy of Business & Foundation will receive a dual curriculum, one from NAF and one from Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The Academy program also features: extensive paid internship in the summer, college credits before graduation, student membership in FBLA and/or DECA, exposure to businesses through job shadowing and field trips, national scholarship opportunities from NAF and Advisory Board, and student conferences, college fairs, and business forums.

Students in the Academy receive a new context for learning. The Academy helps build the motivation, confidence, and sense of personal worth that will lead students of all backgrounds to success. The Academy serves a diverse group of students of all abilities; the program has proven particularly effective for those who are not achieving their full potential.

[edit] Legal & Public Affairs

This academy is made up of two programs; legal and public affairs and criminal justice. The legal component uses the drama of the on-campus courtroom as well as Miami's Governmental system as a laboratory for students to learn about government and the promotion of individual and public welfare. Students will observe trials, commission meetings and conduct research using the same databases used by judges and lawyers. The criminal justice operation program is designed to prepare students for employment with the three subsystems of the criminal justice system: law enforcement, courts and corrections. Areas of career preparation include community service aides, crime scene technicians, telecommunication, officers/dispatchers, criminal analysts, victims advocates, and fingerprint clerks. Links with various colleges, universities and agencies will allow for internships and field experiences that take students to the heart of activity.

[edit] Leisure Medicine and Health Sciences

"The Academy that Cares"

The Leisure Medicine and Health Science Academy provides students the opportunity to pursue their dreams of a career in the health care field by offering a rigorous and relevant curriculum. The three major themes in the curriculum are: nursing assistant, pharmacy technician and first responder (emergency medicine). The students have the opportunity to take the respective national certification exam in each theme at the end of their senior year. In addition, the students may enroll in college dual enrollment courses and take a substantial number of advanced placement courses for potential college credit.

In ninth grade the students are enrolled in Health Science 1 which is a basic overview of anatomy and physiology. While in the tenth grade course, Health Science 2, the students learn basic health care skills such as CPR, first aid, and measuring vital signs. During eleventh grade the students decide on which theme to pursue and take Allied Health Assisting or the first year of the pharmacy technician program. The Seniors either continue their studies of pharmacy or choose the first responder or nursing assistant strand. All of the theme classes provide the opportunity to practice realistic work skills and involve “hands-on” clinical experiences. The students are encouraged to complete their community service hours in a health related area to further augment their studies.

[edit] Visual & Performing Arts

The Visual & Performing Arts Academy at Coral Reef Senior High School offers seven strands of specialization: Band, Chorus, Dance, Orchestra, Piano, Theatre Arts, and Visual Arts; and is comprised of actors, singers, dancers, musicians, and artists who strive for excellence in academics and creative expression, in a nurturing family atmosphere.

Students spend two hours each day over a four-year period immersed in the theory and practice of their particular discipline. Extensive art, sculpture and photography labs, dance and music studios, and black-box theatre serve as settings for our academy students.

Our professional arts teachers all share in the same endeavor: to further the training of career-minded arts students and produce life-long learners who respect and appreciate the role of the arts on the lives and the life of our community. With diligence and application, students develop their maximum potential!

[edit] International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate program (IB) is a highly coordinated, rigorous course of study linking the Humanities, the Sciences, Mathematics, Languages and Community Service. The Curriculum of the IB diploma program incorporates standards that assume a high level of aptitude and achievement. The subjects studied are arranged according to six areas and the candidate is required to choose one subject from each area. The full diploma requires advanced international examinations in the six areas plus the Theory of Knowledge course (TOK), an extended essay, community service and extracurricular activities (CAS).

[edit] Extracurriculars

[edit] Dance

Due to the school's dance-related arts magnet program, Coral Reef has several dance teams ranging from the cheerleading team, to Cuda Flava' (danceline), to the JV and award winning Varsity Cudettes (dance team). There is also a salsa club that performs known as Cuda Salsa, as well as a dance team known as Revamp.

[edit] Band

Coral Reef is a prominent member of the band community. They have had a recent slump due to several band directors in the last few years. Currently, the band program is directed by Brent Mounger. With their 2007 show, Metalmorphasis, the band shows their rebirth into a new era. Their 2007 show consists of Tempered Steel, showing the rough amassing of the new band, Lento, where the band is shaped into its current state, and Machine, where the new band is polished and functions with efficiency, beauty, and strength. The band has gone on to win Grand Champions in the Naples, FL competition, 2nd Place in the Cape Coral marching competition, and has received a superior rating at district evaluation.

[edit] Drama

A student in the Drama program is frequently given the opportunity to "work" or "Tech" shows. Working shows gives students the opportunity to "Learn By Doing." Any student can join the technical theatre club "Tri-T."
