Claudia is a feminine given name. It is a variant of the masculine Claude, which in turn has its origin in the Roman Claudius, which was the name of the gens Claudia. It comes from a Roman family name which was derived from Latin claudus meaning "lame, crippled". This was the family name of several Roman emperors of the 1st century, including the emperor known simply as Claudius. He was poisoned by his wife Agrippina in order to bring her son Nero (Claudius's stepson) to power.

The name Claudia is one of the ten most popular female names in many Spanish-speaking countries and regions, and tends to fall within the top 200 female names in the United States each year. In fact, Claudia was #9 on Spain's top 10 female baby names in 2005. Variations of the name Claudia include Klaudia, Claudine, Claudette, Claudie,Clodia, Kladia, and Gladys.
