Chi Psi, ΧΨ is a fraternity consisting of more than 30 chapters (known as "alphas") at American colleges and universities. It was founded on Thursday May 20, 1841, by 10 students at Union College with the idea of emphasizing the fraternal and social principles of a brotherhood. It was the first Greek-letter organization to be founded on these grounds rather than the literary characteristics of the seven existing societies (the earliest of which was Phi Beta Kappa at William & Mary). In addition, Chi Psi was the first fraternity to establish a fraternity house, at the University of Michigan in 1845, a few months before the Lambda chapter of Beta Theta Pi. All alphas refer to their places of residence as "Lodges" rather than "houses" because the first place of residence in Ann Arbor, Michigan resembled a hunting lodge. Chi Psi Fraternity Inc. is the 8th fraternity to be founded in the U.S. Founded in 1845, Alpha Epsilon at the University of Michigan is the longest active alpha in the United States.

Chi Psi's official colors are Royal Purple and Gold. Chi Psi's national headquarters, the Central Office is in Nashville, Tennessee.
