The Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area is a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) consisting of Lee County in the state of Florida in the USA. The principal cities in the MSA are Cape Coral and Fort Myers. In 2005 the population of the MSA was 549,442.[1] The Fort Myers, Florida Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area was first defined in 1973. In 1981 Cape Coral became a principal city, and the MSA became the Fort Myers-Cape Coral, Florida Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1983 the name was changed to Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1990 it become the Fort Myers-Cape Coral, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2003 the name was changed to its present form.
