Calendar Girls is a British film of 2003, released by Touchstone Pictures, based on the true story of a group of Yorkshire women who produced a nude calendar to raise money for leukemia research, under the auspices of the Women's Institute. To date, Calendar Girls has raised over GBP£1million.

The film stars Academy Award winning actress Helen Mirren and Julie Walters. It also features Philip Glenister, John Alderton, Annette Crosbie, Ciaran Hinds, Celia Imrie, Geraldine James and Penelope Wilton.

Despite the "real life" Calendar Girls being members of the Rylstone Women's Institute, much of the film was shot in and around the village of Kettlewell in North Yorkshire, England. Local buildings and landmarks that feature in the film are described in the "Calendar Girls Trail" brochure, which is available for a nominal fee at local shops and public houses.

Tagline: Some ladies will do anything for a good cause.

[edit] The true story

The fundraising phenomenon of the Calendar Girls was inspired by the sad loss of Angela Baker's husband John who died from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma aged just 54 in 1998. During his illness Angela's friends began to raise money, initially with the aim of purchasing a sofa for the hospital where John was treated.

Nothing could have prepared them for the way their original calendar took off and to date they have raised over £1.3million for Leukaemia Research, the UK's leading blood cancer charity.

The first calendar (2000) became a runaway success. It was also adapted to a US version, covering June 2000 - December 2001. The girls were invited to appear on Jay Leno, Rosie O Donnell and other US TV shows. That year, the calendar sold 202,000 copies.

The Calendar Girls are still strong supporters of Leukaemia Research and they have a range of merchandise in aid of the charity including calendars, greetings cards and chocolates.

The Chocolates, produced by Yorkshire chocolatier Whitaker's, are 12 squares of plain chocolate with the original calendar images on the wrappers. They are available on sale online and in selected outlets.

The Calendar Girls are now hoping their 2008 'Recipe Calendar' will help them towards their new target of £2 million for the charity. The 2008 calendar contains some of the popular 'nude' photos from previous calendars and also includes new pictures of the ladies in their kitchen, preparing 'Yorkshire recipes' featured in the Recipe Calendar.

Speaking about the calendar, Angela Baker said: "The calendar marked a turning point in what we were trying to achieve in John's name. However, for many people the battle with leukaemia, the lymphomas and other blood cancers still goes on. So it means so much to us that we have the support to continue to help Leukaemia Research fund important research into these serious diseases."
