[edit] Acting career
When he was 7 years old he made a very brief appearance in the 1977 movie Dharam Veer where he played the younger version of his father's character.
He made his debut as a leading man in Rajkumar Santoshi's Barsaat, for which he won a Filmfare Best Debut Award. Dharmendra made a extravagantly strong effort in marketing the movie nationwide. Twinkle Khanna daughter of Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna also starred in this movie. unfortunately this movie failed miserably at the box office although he established his career in the industry.[1] This was followed by the murder mystery Gupt: The Hidden Truth. The film went on to become the fifth highest grossing movie of that year and was critically acclaimed. His following film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya did not do well.[2]
In 1998, Deol starred in two films: Kareeb and Soldier. The latter was a lukewarm hit and Deol received much acclaim for his role as a mysterious killer.[3]
In 1999, he starred with his brother Sunny Deol for the first time in Dillagi. The film was also Sunny's directorial debut. The film did not do well at the box office.[4] In 2000 he had moderate success with Badal and Bichhoo both of which were box office failures and his following films did not do as well.[5] After a series of flop films, the actor gained moderate success in 2001 with the murder mystery, Ajnabee[6] In 2002, he starred in four films. Out of his four releases he had a hit with Humraaz, a scene to scene copy of famous thriller A perfect Murder which was commercially.[7] Deol received his first nomination for the Filmfare Best Actor Award. His following films failed to do well at the box office although he did win acclaim for his portrayal of real-life freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in 23rd March 1931: Shaheed. In 2003 he had no film releases and in 2004 his string of box office failures continued.[8]
He continued his series of failures in Tango Charlie (2005). He also starred in Barsaat (2005) and Dosti: Friends Forever (2005). Both the movies did average business in India [9]
In 2007, he played a villainous role in Shakalaka Boom Boom, which failed in India but did better overseas. His second release, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom released in June 2007. The film took in one of the biggest openings in India but failed to recover it's costs due to the negative reviews from both critics and audiences.[10] It did much better overseas, especially in the UK where it debuted and peaked at No. 6 on the charts.[11] His third release Apne saw him, his brother and father starring together for the first time. The film opened to good reviews and did well in India and overseas. His following release, Naqaab failed to do well.[12] though he received good reviews for his performance.[13][14]. His most recent release was Nanhe Jaisalmer where he played himself.
In June 2007, at the recent IIFA Awards show, Deol broke into tears when he was called upon the podium by his father Dharmendra, after his father received the IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award.
