- Not to be confused with the Bank of the Holy Spirit, founded in 1605.
Banco Espírito Santo, whose official name is Banco Espírito Santo e Comercial de Lisboa, and which is known by the acronym BES, is a bank based in Lisbon, Portugal, and was founded in 1920. It is listed on the Euronext 100 index.
"Espírito Santo" is a Portuguese language term for Holy Spirit, or as it is more commonly translated, Holy Ghost. However, it refers to the surname of its founder rather than to any religious term.
The International Phonetic Alphabet spelling of the name of the bank is IPA: ['bɐ̃ku (ɨ)ʃ'piɾitu 'sɐ̃tu].
[edit] Operations
Along with its Azorean, Brazilian and Angolan subsidiaries, the BES is part of the Espírito Santo Financial Group, or ESFG.
