Atlanta is an expansion franchise that has been granted by the Women's National Basketball Association to the city of Atlanta and will begin play in the 2008 season.

As of yet, no nickname or team colors have been selected.

The team is owned by J. Ronald Terwilliger, a real estate mogul. It will play its home games at the Philips Arena, which also plays host to the Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Thrashers.

On November 27, 2007 Atlanta named Marynell Meadors the first head coach/general manager in franchise history. Meadors had been the first-ever head coach of the now-defunct Charlotte Sting when that team began in 1997.
