Marshal of the Air Force of India - Arjan Singh DFC. Note: this rank is a Five Star General's rank; equal to a Field Marshal; only given once in the history of the IAF.[1] There is nothing higher in the military than a Five Star General's rank. He was born on April 15, 1919 in Lyalpur, and educated at Montgomery India (now in Pakistan). He entered the RAF College Cranwell in 1938 and was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in December 1939. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in 1944, and commanded the Indian Air Force Exhibition Flight in 1945. He was Chief of the Air Staff or CAS, from August 1, 1964 to July 15, 1969, and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1965. He was Lt. Governor of Delhi and was made Marshal of the Air Force in January, 2002 (the highest rank ever given in the history of the Indian Air force).[2]
[edit] Marshal of the Air Force of India - "Military Royality"
It is a ceremonial rank (like the Indian President is, but this position is for life) and is widely informally viewed as "military royalty". Many actual Kings and Royalties in the Middle East such as King Abdullah, Sultan of Oman - Qaboos of Oman and in Britain King George VI and King Edward VIII were and are Marshals of the Air Force of their own country's militaries.
