Area code 613

Area code 613 is an area code for Ottawa, Kingston and surrounding Southeastern Ontario, Canada. It used to bound 514 before 450 was created, and until 1993 area code 416 before the introduction of the 905 code. 613 also originally covered most of southwestern Ontario until 1953, when portions of it and area code 416 were combined to form the new 519 code area. In 1957, parts of 519 and 613 formed the 705 code. Area code 613 is one of the original 86 area codes assigned for the US and Canada back in October 1947.

Ten-digit dialing became mandatory on October 21, 2006. The Ottawa area has local dialing capability with the Gatineau region in area code 819. The Ottawa-Gatineau metropolitan area formerly had "exchange protection", meaning that an exchange assigned in Ottawa could not also be assigned in Gatineau, and vice versa. With the introduction of 10-digit dialing, this protection will be discontinued, although the local dialing area will be maintained.

It is expected that by 2012, a second area code will be added in the region as the 613 area code exhausts; it will most likely be in the form of an area code overlay, but that has not been determined yet as of November 2007 by the Canadian federal telecom regulator, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The new area code to overlay 613 (or to possibly split from 613, most likely with Ottawa keeping 613 and the other counties changing), will be 343.[1]

The main incumbent local exchange carrier in 613 is Bell Canada, although there are some five independent companies serving rural exchanges-- the Landsdowne Rural Telephone Company serving Landsdowne ON; the North Frontenac Telephone Company serving Sharbot Lake ON and Parham ON; the North Renfrew Telephone Company serving Beachburg ON, Westmeath ON, and the area outside of Pembroke ON; the Roxborough Telephone Company serving Moose Creek ON; and the Westport Telephone Company serving Westport ON. Also served by area code 613 and Bell Canada is Saint Regis QC, a reservation in Quebec, not Ontario, and borders Fort Covington NY.
