Amrita Singh (born 9th February 1958) is an Indian film actress. She is 5'2" tall, is an Aquarian.

Amrita Singh was born into a distinguished Punjabi Sikh family which hailed from the village of Hadali in present-day Pakistan. Her father Shivinder Singh served in the army; her mother, Rukhsana Sultana, a renowned socialite of Muslim birth, is perhaps best known for her political activism during the Emergency Era. Amrita's paternal great-grandfather, Sir Sobha Singh, was a noted civil contractor who not only made a substantial fortune during the building of New Delhi in the early decades of the 20th century, but also received a knighthood for his efforts. His younger son, and Amrita's paternal grand-uncle, is the renowned litterateur Khushwant Singh.

In 1991, Amrita gave up acting in order to build a family with actor Saif Ali Khan, who is twelve years her junior. The couple had two children: a daughter named Sara and a son named Ibrahim. Saif, who for over a decade had languished at the fringes of Bollywood as a perennial aspirant, finally delivered a succession of hit film in the period 2001-04. The couple were separated in 2004; Amrita now lives with her two young children.

Amrita made her Bollywood debut in 1983 with Betaab, a vastly successful film in which she paired with the debutant Sunny Deol. This was quickly followed by a succession of hits, such as Sunny in (1984); Mard which was the biggest hit of that year, and Saaheb in (1985); Chameli Ki Shaadi and Naam in (1986); Khudgarz in (1987), and so on. Amrita made a successful pair in several films not only with Sunny Deol, her co-debutant, but also with Anil Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan, two leading heroes of that era.

After her wedding in 1991, Amrita undertook virtually no new film commitments; however, she ventured into negative roles in this period, a novelty for a Bollywood actress. Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992) and Aaina (1993) were those in which she essayed such roles. She also won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for the latter. These successes did not dissuade her from her resolve to retire into family life, and Amrita quit acting after 1993. She returned to acting in 2002 with the film 23rd March 1931: Shaheed where she played the mother of Bhagat Singh (played by Bobby Deol). She then appeared on the STAR Plus television serial, Kavyanjali. In 2005 she won acclaim for her performance in the film Kalyug where she played the controller of the pornographic industry.

In 2007, Amrita played the role of the gangster Maya Dolas's mother, Ratnaprabha Dolas, in the Sanjay Gupta film Shootout at Lokhandwala, directed by Apoorva Lakhia. Vivek Oberoi plays the role of Maya.
