[edit] Plot
The story takes place in the fictional town of Trinity, South Carolina, and revolves around Caleb Temple (Lucas Black) and his strange relationship with the town's Sheriff, Lucas Buck (Gary Cole). Sheriff Buck is Caleb's natural father, and after Caleb becomes an orphan (caused by the death of his stepfather, played by Sonny Shroyer), Caleb begins to look to the Sheriff more and more as his father.
Caleb is occasionally visited by the ghost of his deceased sister, Merlyn (Sarah Paulson). Merlyn, who had been killed by Buck, frequently warns him about his relationship with Sheriff Buck. The Sheriff appears to have a hold of fear over the town of Trinity due to his special powers, which he generally uses to manipulate people to "fulfill their potential" and make life-changing choices (usually for evil).
Caleb's cousin, Gail Emory (Paige Turco) comes to town after hearing the news and offers to take Caleb in, but Buck says it would be best for the boy to stay with him. Caleb wants to stay with Dr. Crower (Jake Weber) but the Doctor doesn't think it is a good idea. All this is made harder by the fact that Lucas has supernatural powers and by Merlyn trying to steer Caleb away from the path of evil that Lucas has been tempting him with.
