Amarante (pron. IPA: [ɐmɐ'ɾɐ̃t(ɨ)]) is a municipality in the district of Oporto, in northern Portugal. It has a population of 61,029 and a total area of 301.5 Km². The city itself has a population of 11,261 inhabitants.[1] It sits on the banks of the Rio Tâmega.
The municipality is composed of 40 parishes.

The municipality is well known by the S. Gonçalo's Monastery and by its centenary bridge.
Along with the city of Amarante, the other major location in the municipality is the town of Vila Meã.
Amarante's Mayor is Armindo José da Cunha Abreu, elected by the Socialist Party, for the third consecutive time on 2005.
