• 17 January - South Africa is selected as the host of sub-region's Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre. Included in the sub-region are Angola, Comoros, Madagascar, Mozambique and Namibia

• 4 January - Marais Viljoen, former State President of South Africa, dies in Pretoria from heart failure at the age of 91
• 9 January - Elmer Symons, motorcyclist, dies of injuries sustained in a crash during the fourth stage of the 29th Dakar Rally
• 18 October - Lucky Dube, reggae singer, aged 43, was shot dead in Rosettenville suburb of Johannesburg^[1]
• 20 November - Ian Smith, Prime Minister of Rhodesia, aged 88.
