- The Government of India hopes to achieve a zero drop-out rate from schools all over the country from as high as 52.8% in 2002.

This has been very controversial in the Indian political environment with both Left and NDA opposing the UPA over the issue.
- November 11 - Miss India-Earth Pooja Chitgopekar won in Miss Earth 2007 beauty pageant as Miss Earth-Air (1st-runner up) held in Manila, Philippines.

- April 1 - Laurie Baker, 90, England-born architect known for his low-cost housing
- April 5 - Poornachandra Tejaswi, 69, Kannada writer and novelist, who also had other activities related to farming, study of wild life, photography and painting.
- May 27 - G. Srinivasan, 48, film producer for Tamil and Hindi films, brother of Mani Ratnam
- July 8 - Chandra Shekhar, 80, eleventh Prime Minister of India
- October 10 - S. R. Bommai, 84, Chief Minister of Karnataka, 1988-1989
