1996 NBA Draft
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1996 NBA Draft was the 54th draft in the National Basketball Association. It was held on June 26, 1996 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It is widely considered to be one of the deepest and most talented NBA drafts in history, with over one-third of the first round picks later becoming NBA All-Stars. The draft contained three players currently lauded as future Hall of Famers in Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson and Steve Nash. Other notable All-Stars include Ray Allen, Jermaine O'Neal, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Antoine Walker, Stephon Marbury and Predrag Stojaković.
Chicago Bulls center and four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year All-Star Ben Wallace was not selected in the 1996 draft.
SLAM Magazine named this the best NBA Draft of all time. HOOP Magazine named it the second-best, behind the 1984 draft, whose highlights included Hakeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and John Stockton (who together would form a better starting team than the 1996 draft, which would have great guards sitting on the bench). Most experts rate it along with the 1984 NBA Draft and 2003 NBA Draft as one of the best drafts in history.
