[edit] Astronomy and space exploration
- March 7 - Comet Kohoutek is discovered
- April 6 - Launch of Pioneer 11 spacecraft
- May 14 - Skylab, the United States' first space station, is launched.
- June 30 - Very long total solar eclipse visible in NE South America, the Atlantic, and central Africa. During the entire Second Millennium, only seven total solar eclipses exceeded seven minutes of totality. This was the last. Observers aboard a Concorde jet were able to stretch totality to about 74 minutes by flying along the path of the moon's umbra. In South Africa, a (Toyota) LDV, with a father and his 16y old daughter, drove in and out of what can be describe as a blackhole, for several minutes, traveling between Tzaneen and Letsitele, turning out of and off the main road onto the dirt rd leading to their home on California Plot 70, Letaba. Both sound and well. The experience was as follow: They were suddenly surrounded in pitch black darkness. The headlamps was switched on in an attempt to penetrate , through light on the road without success. It felt as if they were falling at an almost 90 degree angle, allthough the vehicle was still moving up-hill. I(DAUGHTER) looked out of the passenger window with eyes fixed downwards trying to spot the side of the road because they had to turn off at the bend at the top of the hill where they had to turn off. The roadside became clearer as they turn almost on top of the turnoff Suddenly we was in clear daylight again I looked back to see if I could spot the vehicle I saw before the incident which at the time was decending the previous hill. The bend obscure it from view. The father won't stop. At the farm I start walking back to the main road, approximately halfway a vehicle cross on the main rd at the top. --86.149.133.233 (talk) 18:04, 5 January 2008 (UTC)Bold text 05-01-2008
