- March 22 - The Beatles release the album Please Please Me.
- March 27 - Chairmen of British Railways Dr Richard Beeching issues a report calling for huge cuts to the UK's rail network.
- April 15 - 70,000 marchers arrive in London from Aldermarston, to demonstrate against nuclear weapons.

- 17 October - In Stockholm, two Britons (Alan Lloyd Hodgkin and Andrew Fielding Huxley) and an Australian (John Carew Eccles) are announced as winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the ionic mechanisms involved in excitation and inhibition in the peripheral and central portions of the nerve cell membrane".[2]
