Pakistan and India went to war over Kashmir. The Pakistani captured third was known as Azad Jammu and Kashmir, while India occupied the eastern two-thirds.

• 11 September - Mohammed Ali Jinnah dies at the age of 71.
• 11 September - Khwaja Nazimuddin becomes 2nd Governor-General of Pakistan.
