- 30 January - House of Lords rejects Irish Home Rule Bill for the second time.
- 2 April - Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst sentenced to three years of penal servitude.[1]
- 4 June - Emily Davison, a suffragette, runs out in front of the King's horse, Anmer, at the Epsom Derby. She is trampled and dies a few days later, never having regained consciousness.[2]
- 26 July - 50,000 women take part in a pilgrimage in Hyde Park, London organised by the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies.[2]
- 13 August - invention of stainless steel by Harry Brearley in Sheffield.

- Geologist Arthur Holmes publishes his book The Age of the Earth in which describes the estimation of the age of the Earth to 1.6 billion years old using radiometric dating.
