- In Paris, the Académie d'architecture merges with the Académie de peinture et de sculpture (the French Academy) to become the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, the French National School of Fine Arts.

- Regent's Bridge, crossing the River Thames in central London, designed by James Walker, was opened. The bridge was replaced by Vauxhall Bridge in the 1895 - 1906 period.
