- January 30 - Pope Clement VIII (born Ippolito Aldobrandini) succeeds Pope Innocent IX, who died one month earlier, as the 231st pope.
- February 8 - George Gordon, 1st Marquess of Huntly, sets fire to Donibristle Castle and murders James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Moray.
- April 4 - The future Henry IV of France, King designated by Henry III of France, announce in a declaration, so-called "Expedient" his intention to follow an instruction in the catholic religion in the deliberateness to convert. (Also see: 1593, 1594 and 1598.)
- April 13 - Beginning of the Siege of Busan.
- April 24 - The Japanese are victorious over the Koreans at the Battle of Sangju.
- April 28 - In the Battle of Ch'ungju, Japan inflicts a decisive defeat on Korea.
