- January 1 - Parliament on Cetin. Ferdinand of Austria was elected King of Croatia.
- January 5 - Felix Manz, co-founder of the Swiss Anabaptists, was drowned in the Limmat in Zürich by the Zürich Reformed state church.
- March 17 - Battle of Khanwa, one of three major Moghul victories leading to the domination of northern India.
- May 6 - Spanish and German troops led by the Duke of Bourbon sack Rome (the infamous Sacco di Roma), forcing Pope Clement VII to make peace with Charles V.
- May 16 - In Florence, the Piagnon, a group devoted to the memory of Girolamo Savonarola, drive out the Medici for a second time and Florence re-establishes a republic that lasts until 1530.
