- April 25 — Genpei War: The naval Battle of Dan-no-ura leads to a Minamoto victory in Japan, and the death of Emperor Antoku.
- August 15 — The cave city of Vardzia is consecrated by Queen Tamar of Georgia.
- September 11 — Isaac II Angelus kills Stephanus Hagiochristophorites and then appeals to the people, resulting in the revolt which deposes Andronicus I Comnenus and places Isaac on the throne of the Byzantine Empire.
- Templars settle in London and begin building the New Temple Church.
- The Heian Period ends and the Kamakura period begins in Japan.
- The Katedralskolan, the oldest school in northern Europe, and one of the oldest in Europe, is founded in Lund, Sweden.
