Vijayaraj, popularly known as Vijaykanth (Tamil: விஜயகாந்த்), born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India on August 25, 1952, is a popular Tamil film actor and politician.

Born as Vijayaraj on August 25 1952 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. His parents are K.N. Alagarswami and Aandal. He married his wife Premalatha Vijayakanth on January 31, 1990 and has two sons with her, Vijay Prabhakar and Shanmuga Pandian. He is nicknamed 'Captain', as he has starred in a popular movie called "Captain Prabhakharan". "Captain Prabhakharan" was commercially successful and Vijaykanth's 100th film. He a Madurai Naidu, a Telugu speaking community that has established roots in Tamil Nadu for over 400 years, having arrived during the Vijayanagar Empire era.The long association with the Tamil people translates to almost total assimilation and they consider themselves Tamilians. Vijayakanth's party the DMDK receives strong support from this community in the Madurai district and environs.

In 2006, Vijaykanth started a political party DMDK (Desia Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam) and contested in Tamil Nadu Elections. He won from Vridhachalam constituency which was considered a PMK stronghold. Other members of his party did not win. He was able to secure around 8% votes in his first election and in Local Election he got around 17%.

- Donates sewing machines, tricycles, Iron Box, Idli Vessels, etc., to poor people on his birthday.
- Helped poor students with good marks to join colleges and accommodates in his Engineering college without charging any fee from them.
- Donates Rs.25,000/- to little flower school every year.
- Donates Rs.50,000/- to MGR Home for the Hearing Impaired .
- Donated Rs 2 lakhs to Defence Personal Children Education every year.
- Donated Rs.5 Lakhs to Kargil Relief fund.
- Donated Rs.10 Lakhs to Kumbakonam school's fire accident.
- Donated Rs.10 Lakhs to Tsunami Relief.
